Definition of 'Accepting House'

A financial firm that accepts bills of exchange, ie. guarantees that they will be paid on the due date.

An accepting house uses its reputation to earn a fee for acceptance, and its knowledge of financial markets to avoid accepting bills of exchange that are not paid, and that it has to guarantee itself.

The main London accepting houses form the Accepting Houses Committee.
