OperationsΒ Update
Melrose Resources plcΒ (LSE: MRS) ("Melrose" or "the Company"), the oil and gas exploration, development and production company,Β today provides an update on itsΒ operational activitiesΒ inΒ Bulgaria,Β RomaniaΒ andΒ Egypt.
Bulgaria
MelroseΒ is pleased to announce that the Bulgarian GovernmentΒ hasΒ issued aΒ Certificate of Commerciality for theΒ Kavarna gas fieldΒ and the CompanyΒ hasΒ nowΒ submittedΒ anΒ application for aΒ similarΒ CertificateΒ of CommercialityΒ for the Kaliakra field.
TheΒ approval effectively commences the developmentΒ of the Kavarna field, whichΒ contains estimated reserves of 24 Bcf andΒ is locatedΒ 8Β kilometresΒ east ofΒ Melrose's GalataΒ fieldΒ platform.Β The field will be produced using a single subseaΒ wellΒ completion tied back to the GalataΒ facilitiesΒ using a 6 inchΒ flowΒ lineΒ and is expected to be onΒ stream by 1 July 2010.Β Β TheΒ KaliakraΒ field,Β which contains 57 Bcf of reserves,Β isΒ locatedΒ 14Β kilometresΒ east of GalataΒ andΒ will initially be developed using a singleΒ subseaΒ well with a dedicated 10 inch flow lineΒ to allow for future expansion. First gas is expected from this field by 1 October 2010.Β
Β
The twoΒ fieldΒ flow lines will be laid by Grup Servicii Petroliere, aΒ Black SeaΒ based drilling and oil fieldΒ servicesΒ company, using the Bigfoot lay barge and the same company will be responsible for the subsea completion activity. TheΒ totalΒ capital expenditure for the two developments is expected to be $59Β millionΒ (including historic well completion costs)Β equating toΒ $0.73/Mcf.
With respect to other project approvals, the Company is also in active discussions with the Bulgarian Ministry for Economy and Energy to finalise the terms ofΒ an Amendment to the Galata ProductionΒ ConcessionΒ which isΒ requiredΒ for the Galata gas storage project.Β Β
Romania
DuringΒ October the Company formally received approval from theΒ RomanianΒ National Agency of Mineral Resources toΒ conduct petroleum operations inΒ the country under new administrative guidelines.Β ThisΒ is an important step towards receiving theΒ RomanianΒ Government'sΒ approvalΒ to complete the farm-in transaction with Sterling Resources.Β
Egypt
Development activity onΒ Melrose's fieldsΒ in the Nile DeltaΒ hasΒ continued and the Company is pleased to announce that theΒ South KhilalaΒ field, which contains estimated reserves of 36 Bcf,Β wasΒ successfullyΒ brought on stream onΒ 16Β OctoberΒ 2009. The fieldΒ was discovered in the MansouraΒ concession inΒ AprilΒ 2009Β and hasΒ been tiedΒ backΒ to theΒ West KhilalaΒ production facilitiesΒ usingΒ a 10Β kilometre,Β 6Β inchΒ flowΒ line. The combined South andΒ West KhilalaΒ production rate isΒ currentlyΒ 114Β MMcfpd.Β
TheΒ Company is also pleased to announce that it has completed the commissioning activity on theΒ WestΒ DikirnisΒ LPGΒ FractionationΒ TowersΒ and Vapour Recovery Plant.Β The construction activity on the Gas Reinjection facilities is nowΒ expected toΒ beΒ completedΒ in earlyΒ JanuaryΒ due to delaysΒ related to theΒ delivery of equipment from theΒ Far East. This willΒ result in the production of additionalΒ salesΒ gas volumesΒ from the fieldΒ equating to approximately 30 MMcfpdΒ during the last quarter of thisΒ year.Β
The EDC9 drill rig is currently completingΒ theΒ fourth WestΒ Dikirnis horizontal development well and will then commence aΒ fourΒ well drilling program in the Nile Delta, comprising three exploration wells and oneΒ furtherΒ West DikirnisΒ horizontalΒ well.
The firstΒ exploration wellΒ will be drilled to testΒ theΒ North West Nabourah prospect,Β whichΒ isΒ located on the sameΒ QawasimΒ geologic trend as theΒ South and WestΒ Khilala fields,Β and contains mean unrisked reserves ofΒ 60 Bcfe with a Chance of Success ("COS") of 43 percent. The second well will test the Tall Rak structure, a Sidi Salim prospect on the sameΒ geologicΒ trend as the Tamad oil field in the South East Mansoura concession. This prospect has unrisked gas reserves of 190 Bcf with aΒ COSΒ of 33Β percentΒ andΒ similar to TamadΒ hasΒ oilΒ potential. The third well willΒ drill the South Damas Sidi Salim prospectΒ whichΒ has unrisked reserves potential ofΒ 32Β Bcfe and aΒ COSΒ ofΒ 65Β percent.
Following the completion of the Nile Delta drilling sequence, the EDC9 rig will be mobilised toΒ Upper EgyptΒ toΒ spudΒ the first exploration well on theΒ MesahaΒ explorationΒ concessionΒ in late 2010.Β In preparation for the well,Β inΒ earlyΒ 2010Β the CompanyΒ plans toΒ acquireΒ aΒ 2,000 kilometreΒ 2-D seismic survey over the western area ofΒ the concession,Β whereΒ aΒ recent gravity survey hasΒ confirmed the presence of a major untested sedimentary basin.Β MelroseΒ operates and holds a 40Β percentΒ working interest in theΒ Mesaha block.
Commenting on the update,Β David Thomas, Chief Executive said:
"The receipt ofΒ the Certificate of Commerciality for the Kavarna fieldΒ from the new BulgarianΒ GovernmentΒ administrationΒ is an important milestone. WeΒ now look forward toΒ accelerating theΒ developmentΒ of ourΒ various projectsΒ inΒ BulgariaΒ andΒ RomaniaΒ which willΒ contributeΒ significantlyΒ to theΒ regionalΒ domestic gas supply. WeΒ are also looking forward toΒ an active near termΒ exploration programme inΒ EgyptΒ withΒ some important wells to drill in the Nile Delta and 2-D seismic to acquire in the Mesaha block."
