The Amex biotech index,Russell 2000, NASDAQ and S&P 500 indexes all recorded sound gains, whileelsewhere the FTSE, Nikkei 225 and emerging markets also trended upwards. Oilprices continued to soar in July, oscillating around US$ 60 per barrel as anumber of major refineries were closed in the US, including British Petroleum'sfacility in Texas City, the third largest refinery in the country. Finally theYuan was 'unpegged' from the US dollar and linked to a basket of currencies.All styles in the portfolio generated a profit apart from the commodity andtrading category which posted a flat return. Variable equity managers liftedperformance as high net exposures and sizeable allocations to technology,consumer and energy sectors secured significant returns. Meanwhile, event drivenmanagers profited from distressed strategies and merger activity as China'sCNOOC and US based Chevron both made bids for Unocal, while Johnson & Johnsonagreed to buy Guidant, a medical device-maker. In addition the multi-strategystyle captured gains from convertible valuations which rebounded from theirearlier monthly lows.
