July was characterised by uncertainty overa slowing US economy. A sharp sell off in US equities early in the monthnegatively affected both the variable equity and equity hedge strategies.However, the equity hedge strategy posted a profit, benefiting from beta,cyclical industries and homebuilders. Multi-strategy managers with an exposureto event and risk arbitrage contributed positively in July. Relative valuebenefited from exposure to structured credit and convert strategies. Commodity &trading suffered as most commodities spent the month range bound, with theexception of sugar and corn which ended the month lower. Trend followersstruggled as equity markets reversed and currencies continued to be volatile.
