Dialight Corporation, the recognized leader in LED applicationsfor transportation signaling, has been awarded a $1.8 million contractto provide LED trackside signals for the New York City subway system.The contract calls for retrofitting 13,400 incandescent units with LEDmodules, thereby completing conversion of all of the system's morethan 50,000 signals. £ Providing energy savings of 85 percent and a projected servicelife of 10 years, the LED signals are saving the city nearly $1million a year in utility bills and maintenance. They are designed toretrofit two 16-watt incandescent bulbs with a robust module based onthe latest high-flux LED and driver technology. £ "The new signals are being well received by the city's transitworkers, who have indicated they are performing extremely well, andthat the saturated colors of the LEDs are much more visible, resultingin greater safety on the tracks," commented Laura Hoffmann, Dialightbusiness development manager. £ Dialight had been working with the New York City Transit Authorityfor the past six years in developing an LED signal that can be easilyinstalled into a wide variety of existing enclosures withoutnecessitating the difficult and costly removal of the lenses, some ofwhich have been in place for more than 50 years.
