Trading Statement
Β
Bloomsbury Publishing announces that 2008Β trading wasΒ in line withΒ management'sΒ expectations.Β
Β BloomsburyΒ publishedΒ theΒ twoΒ highest selling booksΒ of the yearΒ inΒ the TimesΒ list of Top Bestsellers of 2008Β and three of the top ten.Β A Thousand Splendid SunsΒ was number one,Β The Tales of Beedle the Bard number two,Β andΒ TheΒ Kite RunnerΒ number eight.
Β Sales wereΒ goodΒ in difficult market conditionsΒ driven by a strong publishing programmeΒ which includedΒ The Kite RunnerΒ andΒ A Thousand Splendid SunsΒ byΒ Khaled Hosseini;Β JK Rowling'sΒ The Tales of Beedle The Bard,Β on behalf ofΒ her charity, The Children's High Level Group;Β The SnowballΒ - Warren Buffett and the Business of LifeΒ by Alice Schroeder;Β The Suspicions of Mr WhicherΒ by Kate Summerscale;Β The Big Fat Duck CookbookΒ by Heston Blumenthal;Β Just MeΒ by Sheila Hancock;Β andΒ The Graveyard BookΒ by Neil Gaiman.Β Rights deals,Β includingΒ Qatar Finance - The Ultimate Resource and theΒ publishingΒ partnership with Qatar FoundationΒ also contributed to the year.Β The Group made four acquisitions in 2008:Β Featherstone, Berg,Β JohnΒ Wisden andΒ TheΒ Arden Shakespeare, and launched one new division, Bloomsbury Academic.
Period-end cash for the Group is likely to be in excess of Β£50m.Β In 2009 investment income willΒ decline in line with the decrease inΒ theΒ UK bank baseΒ rate.Β We are mindfulΒ of theΒ impact of theΒ uncertainty in the global economy onΒ theΒ book publishingΒ market, thoughΒ it is not clear at this stage what the quantumΒ of that impactΒ will be. AΒ handful of customersΒ have already closedΒ or are in administrationΒ butΒ books have been reasonablyΒ resilientΒ in previous economic downturns. Over the past two years,Β BloomsburyΒ has concludedΒ database and management licences and contractsΒ withΒ leading organisationsΒ which,Β because they areΒ long-term in nature,Β willΒ provideΒ greaterΒ certainty of cash flow and profit stability for the Group for the next five years.Β Β
The preliminary results for the year ended 31st December 2008Β will be announced onΒ 31stΒ March 2009.
