However, extending coverage in hard to reach, sparsely populated areas is unlikely to provide much of a return on investment for the UK's mobile network operators (MNOs). To counter act this, the UK regulator is set to offer a discount when it auctions off low-band 5G spectrum later this year.

O2, Vodafone and Three have called for a joint investment between the UK's 4 MNOs, which would facilitate a roam-like-at-home style arrangement, whereby customers could roam between networks free of charge in sparsely populated, economically unviable areas. This would dramatically reduce the amount of investment required to achieve the 95 per cent coverage target.

However, BT appears to be reticent to open up its network to its competitors. EE and BT have invested significantly more in their rural network than its competitors and appears to favour Ofcom's plans to discount spectrum at auction as the best way to boost rural coverage.

“We have already invested heavily to create the widest 4G coverage in the UK, and we are keen to collaborate with government and industry to extend rural coverage into areas where there is none today,” a BT spokesperson told The Times over the weekend.

Here have been treated like Shiite like in many AIM companies. It's a shame because the reason this market was devised was so private investors could support fledgling companies to fund raise and prosper. Unfortunately, like anything in life there are bunches of cuuunts every where you look seeing where they can benefit at others misfortune and not giving a feck if they lose out.

Top to bottom it's full of arsoles.. From corrupt Directors to media savvy shorters the market is a cess pit. So excuse me and others for hoping, no willing that the LTHs here get a decent return even for just 1 day.

Poundashare, what you forget is that BT will have built and paid for the FTTP network...it's theirs and not some incumbent old legacy network that they inherited and its future proof. There is no chance Openreach will be sold. It might be modified and modernised and stream lined as the fibre network becomes reality, but it is the wholesaler of broadband services to all the other providers of choice and the biggest money spinner that BT own apart from EE. There's a very good reason BT fought to keep Openreach. In 5 years when the legacy PSTN and ISDN services close down the real financial benefits will be felt and Openreach will be bigger than BT Retail and the pain now will feel like a bad case of man flu who wakes up and has won the lottery.

Why would they sell Openreach when all the major providers have to buy the superfast and ultrafast broadband off them and filling the BT coffers.....

Once the full fibre network is completed in about 10 years it will be BTs biggest asset and without probably 70% of the workforce.

That the ii have sold to increase liquidity of shares here to create impetus of a market as news is released?
