I concur about the heavy seller. My buy for 342,767 shares hasnt shown up. Last time that happened in May a huge sell followed. I wouldnt like to describe it in scatological terms for fear of being banned

Demand management seems to be low hanging fruit and how far can it be pushed? They ( a regional grid )pay this company around £300,000 / year for a kill switch on their industrial freezers. This is to make available an average available load of 3 MW!! In otherwords they can load-shed 3 MW and pay for it

But its bizarre - but how do they work out an annual costing?. Still when you are talking about the National Grid, its always big money ; the capital costs for a gas fired power station are about USD 1,000 / kw - a 1.5 GW gas station would be USD 1.5 billion , not including the price of gas feed

The costs of blackouts and the attendant disruption is huge. The National Grid needs to be heavily fined ( or atleast bonus's cancelled) for any blackouts. They will soon do their sums

alfa: very true , but they have always had constant speed generators. Traditionally steam turbines used load governors to adjust the supply of steam when load fluctuates. Dumping it to resistors would be a fall back solution.

the problem is compounded with wind turbines. To extract the maximum amount of energy from wind, the turbine speed will fluctuate with the wind speed. The national grid is managing of course but it is showing signs of instability

alfacomp: please read up on the national grid. They are having a difficulty in balancing generation and are managing it somehow with quick startup generators and controlling demand. Denmark is a smaller country and probably exporting its windpower generation when it produces in excess.

National Grid 'had three blackout near-misses in three months

The Guardian understands that in every month since May there has been a severe dip in the grid’s frequency from its normal range around 50Hz. Industry sources have confirmed that the grid’s frequency has fallen below 49.6Hz on three different occasions in recent months, the deepest falls seen on the UK grid since 2015. On Friday the blackout was triggered when the frequency slumped to 48.88Hz.

In June, the frequency of the grid plummeted to within a whisker of National Grid’s legal limit of 49.5Hz after all three units of EDF Energy’s West Burton gas-fired power plant in Nottinghamshire tripped offline without warning.

National Grid has managed to avoid wide scale blackouts by triggering last-minute contracts to help it stabilise the grid and avoid breaching the crucial 49.5Hz limit set by the regulator.

The UK’s booming renewable energy output can make it more difficult for National Grid to balance the frequency of the grid, which was originally built to accommodate fossil fuel power plants, which generate more intensive energy.

the Telegraph are describing a moment of truth. Windpower is unstable , but a small amount of it can be tolerated by the grid, say 5-10%. If the percentage share of windpower generation increases, then then you have to consider how to deal with fluctuations in windpower output. Once method of course is battery storage

Perhaps the National Grid could use this idea. Right now they are mixing windfarms with gas generators and paying windfarms constraint payments when they over produce. Plus the occasional blackouts when there are frequency issues :lol:

Windfarm turbines generate AC. Becasue the AC generated varies in frequency despite having pitch control on some turbines, it is rectified to DC. Ideally it should pass through a battery to smoothen out the fluctuations in wind power generation. Batteries of course are charged by DC. Eventually when it is connected to the grid it must be converted back to AC and stepped up to high voltages for transmission at a substation

This is different from peaking power managment which is about spikes in demand, not generation . This simply smooths the output of the wind turbine

alfa: Battery backup of every generator is not required. But installing batteries right next to the point of consumption goes against the principle of the grid, which is load balancing. Peaking power generation is currently managed by a separate set of generators controlled by a centralised dispatch centre (or centres). The national grid uses gas powered generators or even diesel in some cases. If VRFB batteries are to be used for peaking power, whats the point of making them local, it restricts their range. If there is a shortfall in one region and excess stored capacity in another region ( due to an unforeseen incident ) then those batteries cant be used

There certainly will be secondary local dedicated UPS type battery storage farms for Hospitals and other critical services. We cannot rely on the grid, its not totally guaranteed.

Anyway we shall see. By accounts its apparent that the National Grid hasnt done a lot of thinking about how to use battery storage. I'm sure they can increase grid capacity to whatever peaking grid requirement there is . Transmission lines are relatively cheap compared to generation and storage

IMO the location of the battery would be influenced by the grid layout.

With an ultra high voltage power grid, the location of the generators ( whatever form they are ) could potentially be over a 1000 km away. Sub stations step-up generated electricity to 132 kV to minimise losses and to supply different regions far away.

I would theorise that batteries would be located next to the substations before stepping up. There is no real need to locate them next to large cities
