The difficult bit, "All you have to do is pick the right ones."
In absence of being able to see the future then pick a large basket with some probability the winners will compensate for the dead-ends and losers. For IPO they also need to keep expenses well down and there's always the need to make use of the cycle, which is not in their favour at the moment.
Unfortunately exits at good multiples have been harder to come by so this languishes.
A blockbuster exit would help. When the cycle turns (I don't know when) this should rise very convincingly. Trouble is, have no idea when and that will be as much trend following and momentum investing as it is supporting nascent new tech companies and industries.
My conclusion, size a position in IPO carefully and just forget about it.
GROW has done ok for me so far. IPO could learn something from them.
