Am I worried, YES.
It goes from Bad to worse. Sunack's performance, and previous Tory leaders of late, in a nutshell:
Although the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, commonly known as the furlough scheme, received praise for its role in preventing widespread job losses during the pandemic, it also faced criticism from certain business leaders. They contended that the scheme was expensive and unsustainable in the long run. It was noted that Germany had implemented similar measures earlier, and the UK government's approach was seen as largely imitative, despite their claims to the contrary.
Business rates posed a significant concern for many businesses in the UK. Critics argued that Sunak had not taken sufficient steps to reform or reduce these rates, which were deemed a substantial burden on businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.
Self-employed individuals received less comprehensive financial support compared to those in traditional employment during the pandemic.
Some business leaders and economists pointed out that Sunak's economic policies lacked clarity and a clear long-term vision. This lack of clarity made it challenging for businesses to plan for the future. The HS2 project, for instance, has been frequently cited as problematic, regardless of one's perspective.
Critics raised concerns that Sunak's commitment to fiscal responsibility and reducing government debt could lead to future austerity measures. These measures might have adverse effects on public services and businesses reliant on government contracts or a thriving economy.
The uncertainty surrounding Brexit negotiations generated worries among businesses about potential disruptions to trade and supply chains. Some criticized the government, including Sunak, for failing to provide adequate clarity and support during this period of uncertainty.
Certain business leaders and environmental advocates called for more substantial investments in green initiatives and sustainability. They argued that Sunak's economic policies, marked by indecisiveness, did not adequately address climate change or promote green businesses. The perception was that Sunak adhered to traditional Tory policies that often resulted in policy reversals at critical junctures.
It's important to recognize that public perceptions and criticisms can evolve over time, and developments may have occurred since my last knowledge update in September 2021. To obtain the most current information regarding criticisms directed at Rishi Sunak's policies and actions, I recommend consulting recent news sources and analyses.
