RIYADH: Egypt and France have signed a €7 billion ($7.6 billion) agreement to develop a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production complex near Ras Shokeir on the Red Sea coast.

EDF Renewables and Zero Waste will lead the project in partnership with the General Authority for the Red Sea Ports and the New and Renewable Energy Authority.

Since HAR2 applications closed in Spring 2024, government has conducted a comprehensive assessment process to produce a shortlist of projects that are invited to the next stage of the HAR2 process. The shortlist contains the following 27 electrolytic projects across England, Scotland, and Wales:

The contractually agreed 30,000 tonnes will be produced at RWE's 300MW electrolysis plant in Lingen (GET H2 Nucleus), which will be operational by 2027.

In a groundbreaking step for the hydrogen market, TotalEnergies and RWE have for the first time agreed on conditions for the purchase of green hydrogen over a period of 15 years. The agreement stipulates that TotalEnergies will purchase around 30,000 metric tons of green hydrogen per year from RWE for its refinery in Leuna (Saxony-Anhalt) from 2030. This is the largest quantity of climate-neutral hydrogen ever contracted from an electrolyser in Germany.

The agreement is a signal for the German market because fuel suppliers such as refineries are encouraged to gradually reduce their greenhouse gas emissions over time. Using 30,000 metric tons of green hydrogen in a refinery saves 300,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. That's how much 140,000 cars emit on average per year.

Indian government backs truck trial

Tata Motors' trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks mark a major step in advancing sustainable manufacturing within India’s commercial vehicle sector.

The trial was officially inaugurated by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, and Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, with Tata Motors’ Executive Director Girish Wagh also in attendance alongside key government and industry representatives.

Funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project highlights the government’s commitment to accelerating green fuel adoption in manufacturing and logistics.

Tata Motors secured the tender to conduct the trial, which will evaluate the feasibility of hydrogen-powered vehicles for long-distance haulage.

This initiative not only advances clean energy integration in heavy vehicle production but also paves the way for the development of a robust hydrogen-powered transport ecosystem.
