I think the term Spud like lots of other "Oiler" terms comes from the fact that (back in the day) a Jack up rig has largish cylinders on the bottom of the legs, when they are lowered to start drilling operations the "Spud cans" contact the sea bed, a vacuum is then applied to draw them into the sea bed hence the term spud.
Thats my understanding when I was Field OIM working with Ensco.

You know when Gill mentioned Orinduik was one large pool of Oil I thought it a strange comment, but now we find ourselves with a major Oil discovery on the first attempt , now I see where he's coming from! Orinduik is a target with many appraisal opportunity's, I really think and IMHO this is massive.
