In equity markets, supermarket chain Tesco lifted annual profits guidance after better-than-expected third-quarter and Christmas sales.

The company said it now expected retail operating profit to be slightly above the top-end of previous £2.5bn - £2.6bn guidance, and forecast bank operating profit to be between £160m - £200m, due to the effect of more favourable economic forecasts on its provision for expected credit losses.

Outlook

We continue to target a full-year underlying profit before tax on a post-IFRS 16 basis of £80m to £90m. The Omicron impact seen in December shows that the challenges associated with COVID-19 are still present. Our guidance assumes that the impacts of Omicron continue to diminish, and that we do not experience further variants of similar severity.

Quite a spectacular rebound for European tech stocks this
morning!

The sector's index is up well over 2% about 30 minutes after
the opening bell, which suggests many traders believe
yesterday's retreat was somewhat overdone.

NielsenIQ said M&S's grocery sales soared 9.4% in the 12
weeks to Jan. 1 from the same period a year earlier, with growth
accelerating from its November report.

In November, M&S said it had beaten forecasts for first-half
profit and upgraded its earnings outlook for the second time in
three months, sending its stock soaring on bets that one of
Britain's most elusive turnarounds could finally materialise.

Its shares have now surged 84% over the last year.

Some analysts believe M&S, which also sells clothing and
homeware, could upgrade its 2021-22 profit outlook again on
Thursday when it publishes its own third-quarter trading update.
