Not yet clear whether Britons can take holidays this year - minister

LONDON, Feb 10 (Reuters) - British transport minister Grant
Shapps said he couldn't say whether people would be able to take
holidays at home or abroad this year, as it depends on how the
virus, and particularly new variants of the virus, respond to
vaccines.

"I'm afraid I can't give you a definitive will there or will
there not be the opportunity to take holidays this next year
either at home or abroad," Shapps told Sky News on Wednesday.

He said the numbers of people arriving in the UK each day
was between 16,000 to 20,000 people and that included hauliers,
bringing goods into or out of the country.

UK estate agent Foxtons is also said to be the subject of takeover interest. The UK’s Times newspaper notes speculation that potential suitors are weighing an offer for the company. The suggestion is that private equity firms are looking at the company on hopes of a revival in the high-end London property market.

Foxtons trades well below its peak from 2014 and it would not come as a huge surprise to hear they’ve attracted takeover interest. It also would not be the only M&A story in the space after Countrywide accepted a bid from Connells at the end of last year. That deal for Countrywide was 395p per share, valuing the estate agent at £134mln.

LONDON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - British online grocer and
technology group Ocado Group on Tuesday reported a 69%
increase in 2019-20 core earnings, as the COVID-19 pandemic
generating huge demand for home delivery.

Ocado made earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and
amortisation (EBITDA) of 73.1 million pounds ($100.7 million) in
the year to Nov. 29 2020, versus company guidance of "over 70
million pounds" and the 43.3 million pounds it made in 2018-19.
($1 = 0.7261 pounds)

LONDON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Banks in Britain have been
shielded from the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic by
government relief measures and the toughest time has yet to
come, Bank of England Deputy Governor Sam Woods said on Friday.

Government relief schemes such as furlough payments and
guarantees on loans from banks to companies, are being wound
down in coming months.

"We feel good about what's happened so far but in a way the
tougher bit is coming," Woods told a London School of Economics
webinar. "The government has pushed out a lot of stress in time,
but some will still come through."

LONDON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Energy prices for millions of
Britons will likely rise from April after the energy regulator
said it would increase its cap on the most widely used tariffs
by around 9.2%.

The rise was needed due to an increase in wholesale energy
prices over the past few months and as energy suppliers would be
allowed to begin recouping costs relating to the coronavirus
pandemic, regulator Ofgem said.

As a result of the four week lockdown in November and the subsequent UK-wide lockdown that commenced in early January 2021, combined with further reductions in winter flying programmes, consumer demand for forward holidays has remained very weak with UK traffic, bookings and spend on online marketing activity across the first four months of the financial year down 73%, 83% and 85% respectively. The Group has responded prudently to the latest travel restrictions by taking holidays off-sale that depart prior to 1 May 2021. We expect booking demand to remain weak until these restrictions are lifted and vaccine deployment is more widespread, both in the UK and our major travel destinations, which will impact H1 and full year performance.
