RE: After the ‘’phenomenal result’’ (LOL), what could happen?29 Dec 2024 17:47
I’m back from Gabon where I observed live last (feverish) weeks of "Guido era". The "technical" criteria mentioned by some are fanciful:
Forestry activity has stopped. They’re just trying to get out already cut logs to process them, but they’re not in good condition and with the rains, it’s complicated, they’ve to create tracks (muddy…) in the forest.
Warehouses are not full. There were a few pallets of veneer left, which were repackaged to be delivered to a customer who has been waiting for them for a long time. A video shows this, but it’s not at all part of the current activity. It will not make the company any money.
The lumber yard has no real stock to process, it’s miserable. They even bought a few logs from other forestry companies. Surreal.
At the port, there are a couple of containers ready for export, but this is old news and since the freight forwarders and carriers are not paid, they’ll go anywhere.
There are less than 100 employees, the other 200 mentioned by Guido only had short-term contracts, they were not renewed and workforce has therefore returned to less than 100 for several months.
Processing lines are not operational, because equipment have not been maintained, so machines are dangerous to use or inoperable.
Log transport trucks are in process of being seized by banking credit institution (Finatra, a subsidiary of BGFI Bank). And of the initial fleet of machines (14), only 6 are still running.
The head of Mouila exploitation site fled about two weeks ago after having diverted what he could from a meager local activity.
Woodbois' reputation in Gabon is a nightmare. Absolutely no one trusts them at all. By constantly swindling administration, suppliers, service providers, subcontractors and employees, you would have to be a magician (particularly rich and especially generous...) to reverse the trend. With a lot of money and a management team of serious, competent and motivated guys (task is immense), well paid, it could be relaunched after a year. So, don't dream about "increasing" productivity (it can't drop any further) and a return to balance or substantial profits in 2025, it's a pure mirage.
As for carbon credits story, it's all hot air. We’re in a pattern of shareholder manipulation when we talk about this great prospect.
This is the situation at the end of the year.
