Oh did manage a huge one once, got have been 8ft and the stem was big strong but the flowers get super top heavy I doubt any stalks can hold up without a little support, I used two bamboo sticks either side which worked but it even threw them about and they were rooted deep.

Like you said I think the issue was just expecting them to grow by planting then in the garden it worked the one year but only a few and they were giant multi headed ones couldn't seem to get any single giant headed ones.
The other issue I found was the birds maybe ate the seeds or when little younglings maybe slugs and birds, I can only assume.
