HHH I agree generally -however I would say that I believe this picture will turn sharply. 160m annualised cost reductions and the one offs gone and the pension contribution incident gone . Also potentially clearance on the cyber issue

Think tank: Labour manifesto has ‘little detail’ and ‘no fireworks’

The Social Market Foundation think tank labelled Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour blueprint a “Ming Vase manifesto”.

Theo Bertram, the director of the SMF, said there was “little detail” and “no fireworks” in the document.

He said: “The Ming Vase manifesto: change but with caution; great determination, little detail. “There are no fireworks, no surprises, no great adventure but plenty of policies that Labour has already announced.

“It’s not fair to say it is without ambition or new ideas but it is light on detail. If the polls are right, Labour will enter Downing St on July 5 with a huge majority in favour of a clear mandate for change that is significantly undefined.”

I did SK-nothing of substance in there -he was asked if you dont get growth will you tax more, increase debt or cut public services-he said I dont accept we wont get growth. He wont go back to austerity he says which only means two things-more debt or more taxes on the taxes he said he wont rise

Labour manifesto only sets out one year of costings

The Labour manifesto only explicitly outlines their costs of their tax rises and spending promises for a single year: 2028/29. That would be their fifth year in office if they win, writes Ben Riley-Smith.

The party justifies the approach by saying in the foreword before the costings pages that the final year will see costs at their highest.

The manifesto says: “We have used the last year of the most recent Office for Budget Responsibility forecast (2028-29) which represents the highest annual cost of the policies.”

But it is a different approach to the Tories, who on Tuesday produced a manifesto with costings figures for each of the next five five years.

A Tory source says: “Labour have have not laid out tax and spending plans for the next five years, only showing one year, and that’s in four years time. Says nothing about the next three years. This is totally unserious.”

@JG-and that’s another unknown- how are capital losses to be treated in the future. What if you can’t use them or as much of them?

Lordy accepted but in my view this company is going to turn round quicker than you think once the cuts feed through. You are talking about dividends. How will those be taxed ? What rates of CGT will there be ? Will they be linked to you tax rate for example? Lots of uncertainties

McFadden pressed on Labour's capital gains plans

McFadden is now asked if Labour would raise capital gains tax if it formed the next government.

"There is nothing in our manifesto that requires further increases in tax," he says.

Pressed again, he repeats the same sentence.

Naga Munchetty then points out that he can't say it in a sentence that capital gains tax will not rise.

McFadden reiterates, with a slight smile, his line that there is nothing in the manifesto that will require a further increase in tax.

Lordy I have the same feeling as you-I would say dividend early April 2026.

But Im really concerned about what this Labour government proposes to do-they are only saying there is no mention of CGT etc in the manifesto not that they wouldnt raise it during the Parliament or scrap allowances. I think that's almost certainly coming. They are being extremely misleading
