EU - slowly waking up to the threat of raw material supply from China as Auto manufacturers rush to EVs

Europe is so far behind China in mine production and mineral processing it is very hard to see how the EU is going to stimulate sufficient European production to meet new demand from its automotive, wind turbine and other manufacturers.

Price squeeze: Auto manufacturers are now faced with having to compete with a number of new rapid-growth, Chinese manufacturers for commodities which are almost exclusively processed in China and where the mines are also often under Chinese control.

All the world’s hard-rock, spodumene, lithium production is processed in China into battery grade lithium hydroxide indicating the stranglehold the Chinese have on critical raw material supply.

REEs: some 70-77% of the World’s REE are processed in China with that proportion rising when it comes to REE supply control according to the Foreign Policy Research Institute in their analysis on 7 October 2020.

While auto manufacturers are expert at cutting costs and thrifting they are not so used to competing with China inc. for raw materials and will need to offer firm contracts to miners and refiners to stimulate sufficient new raw material supply to avert serious shortages in Europe as EV manufacturing ramps up.

We are recruiting for postdocs to start immediately as part of a research team monitoring the levels of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater facilities across Northern Ireland.

The post-holders will become part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and practitioners developing an all-Ireland SARS-CoV-2 surveillance programme which will seek to complement Public Health data and inform decision-making. The project will involve the routine sampling of wastewater treatment facilities and the analysis of these samples for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-qPCR and whole genome sequencing. Samples will also be analysed for the presence of viable virus. The post holders will be responsible for the planning and delivery of the research activity within this project so that the overall research objectives of the project are met

The Hughes group has two Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Postdoc) positions available in molecular virology to work on SARS-CoV-2 related projects.

The first position is a three-year post funded by a Strength in Places award examining SARS-CoV-2 persistence and transmission from surfaces to skin. The project will also examine the molecular response of skin to viral exposure, how resident skin microbiota influence viral infectivity, and how standard hygiene interventions inactivate the virus and prevent transmission.

The project is in collaboration with the industry partners - Unilever and Labskin - and there is capacity to establish further industry links.

Agree 100% Forrest. Every Covid stock, bar Pfizer, were down today. We're now back at a price when Labskin was the main string to our bow. What comes of the other plays are a bonus. I might be down 20% on my DV holding today but on a positive my pension pot has risen by 5%, so not all bad.

It'll do for now I guess but I've had the nasal/throat test and it wasn't a great experience. As I've queried before, you can test negative at the airport then contract Covid on day 1 of your visit, spread it around your holiday destination and only discover you have it at your departure airport. Then what? You're not allowed home and have to find accommodation. My daughter currently has Covid, she's fine, but her Uni flat mates aren't going to get tested so they can carry on with their lives!! We need DV's user friendly, digital pass solution asap.

Does anyone on here truly believe that those making multimillion pound deals will be swayed by an article published by the Daily Star etc? DVRG have said they have a publicity strategy worked out, and I imagine it's one we'll probably be oblivious to, going on in the background, aimed at attracting customers not fans. Basically, they know what they're doing.
