British-American pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline says its Covid-19 antibody treatment has been shown to be effective against the full combination of mutations in the new Omicron variant.

Tests done in-vitro against a pseudo-virus that recreates a synthesised version of Omicron showed that sotrovimab, GlaxoSmithKline's antibody treatment, stands up to all mutations in the spike protein of the Omicron variant and not just the key mutations, the company said in a statement.

The tests included all 37 spike protein mutations identified to date. Glaxo's observations come amid uncertainty about whether Omicron erodes the defences of existing medicines and vaccines, and by how much.

A 15-year-old boy in the northern province of Son La has become the fourth child in Vietnam to die after receiving the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.
The boy, a resident of Thuan Chau District, received the first vaccine dose on Dec. 4 and did not show any unusual symptoms 60 minutes after the injection, deputy director of Son La’s health department Nguyen Huu Hung told VnExpress Wednesday.

Two days later, however, he felt dizzy and nauseous. He was taken to the district hospital before being transferred to the Son La General Hospital where he died Tuesday.

The teenager is the fourth child in Vietnam to die after a Covid-19 vaccine shot.
