Helium Summit: Semiconductors surpass MRIs in helium use

Semiconductors now account for over a fifth (21%) of global helium demand, surpassing MRI applications for the first time, driven largely by chips powering artificial intelligence (AI) across Asia and increasingly worldwide.

“This shift highlights how AI-driven chip production is fueling helium demand growth, even as MRI helium use declines due to improved efficiency,” said Lita Shon-Roy, President and CEO of TechCET, who spoke about the trend at gasworld’s Helium Super Summit in Austin.

Lita Shon-Roy noted the semiconductor industry is set to grow by an average of 6.3% annually, including a 14.6% surge this year.

Helium is critical in semiconductor manufacturing, used primarily to cool wafers during high-temperature processes like etching and deposition. These steps are energy-intensive, and helium helps maintain precise temperature control.

Helium Summit: More investment needed in US helium exploration

Too little investment is being directed toward helium exploration in North America, just as the region is on track to become a net importer.

That was the stark message delivered by Nick Snyder, Chairman and CEO of North American Helium (NAH), during day two of gasworld’s Helium Super Summit in Austin.

“The US is losing around three million cubic feet per year of [helium] production due to the decline of legacy sources,” Snyder told delegates. “The only way to replace this is with discoveries that make economic sense.”

NAH currently operates ten helium plants in Saskatchewan, Canada, and recently brought an eleventh facility online in partnership with Helium Evolution. The company now accounts for roughly 8% of North American helium production and holds nine million acres of exploration rights.
