Comes just from the meeting in Jokkmokk about the Lule River with, among others, Birger Lahti and it emerged that if there is an iron mine at Jokkmokk - and it probably is - then the Inlandsbanan is needed for iron transport. Apparently, it is entirely possible with some upgrading.

As far as the mine is concerned, it is located in completely useless forest (new and old calcareous) and an iron mine has emissions that can be managed if you wish. And we can't put all the mines in someone else's backyard. I think - like V in Jokkmokk - that the place is quite well "chosen". The Sami lands are somewhat limited and this is probably the biggest problem.

where exactly are we in this arbitration process? Did we ever actually start it or are we just emailing them to see if they will pay up anyway? Also, if they are not keeping to the terms of the court determined arbitration - why are we not back in court to argue their contempt of court?

am assuming they would not have extended the loan if they did not think the SP was likely to rise substantially in the next few months. Let's hope they've been given the nod....

It's a bribe but what the hell, it's probably what the Sami have been angling for all this time - "compensation". I suspect the licence has been held up until the Sami start liking the money thrown at them. They know it's leaning our way now so would be surprised if they don't take it (though I suspect the final bribe will be a lot bigger).
