General Motors has developed an all-new digital vehicle platform necessary for its next-generation of vehicles, EVs, active safety, infotainment and connectivity features, and the evolution of the Super Cruise driver assistance feature.*

As the automotive industry and vehicles evolve in the next five to 10 years, more electrical bandwidth and connectivity will be needed to ensure that features like electric propulsion systems, the Super Cruise driver assistance feature and advanced active safety systems can all run in conjunction with each other.

Debuting on the recently-unveiled 2020 Cadillac CT5 sedan, the electronic platform will go into production later this year and should be rolled out to most vehicles within GM’s global lineup by 2023.

Aptiv, which develops technologies for autonomous cars, is working on an intelligent driver monitoring system at its tech centre in Kraków. This technology will be developed with the support of the National Centre for Research and Development.

Polish engineers at Aptiv`s Tech Center Krakow are working on the Interior Sensing Platform, which is based on artificial intelligence, and its main task is to improve road safety also by detecting a drop in driver concentration.

The system monitors the interior of the vehicle with 2D and 3D cameras and sensors supported by software. It not only checks whether the driver is watching the road, but also understands whether the driver is physically and emotionally available and not, for example, focused on a smartphone in his hands.

The Aptiv system supports many functions, including personalization and identification based on the driver`s face, as well as gestures and sight control. In the event of detecting the danger of, for example, the driver falling asleep, the system can also perform actions that will help minimize the risk of an accident. For example, in a situation where the system notices that the driver often closes his eyes, it will notify the driver of the drop in concentration and suggest a stop or coffee.

In November 2018, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said even he doesn’t think self-driving technology will ever be able to operate in all possible conditions without some human interaction.
