Jab, I agree with most of what you say , except for the bringing down demand point. A poorer country resulst in people shivering under blankets instead os switching on the heating and higher prices mean less industry here - more overseas. We are heading for net zero employment the way this government is going - poverty really is on the rise just now - look around and ask around - the pensioners were round1!

Denby, two options - you may have considered already - but just in case;

1.Speak to a scaffolder to see if they could erect a platform on the gable wall that was supported entirely from your garden/roof , that did not touch the neighbours garden but hangs' in the correct place for the repair.

2. Work out when the neighbours are on holiday/away/at work and jfdi.

In both cases ignore the neighbours protestation - even if they went for legal redress that should be limited to damage to their property which would be nil.
