Energy solutions firm SMS has successfully connected its first battery storage energy system to grid, with the 50MW project set to deliver a range of balancing mechanisms to improve grid flexibility.

SMS announced on Monday (31 January) that its 50MW system is now live in Burwell, Cambridgeshire. The company claims the system can store the equivalent amount of energy required to serve thousands of homes in the UK.

The annual cost of the UK's net-zero transition could be billions of pounds cheaper if policymakers and the public and private sectors collaborate to scale up battery storage, hydrogen and other flexible energy innovations.

The European Commission will require EU member states to give more detailed energy statistics from next month including about the types of hydrogen used.

For example the government is building a green hydrogen facility at a windfarm in East Renfrewshire so green hydrogen is coming along. The only equipment is what we’ve built and are testing, along with consultative partners, and it is for the green hydrogen. You’re quite right, grey hydrogen is a no go because it’s been outlawed, blue hydrogen is greenwashing I guess – and they actually look to bury all the CO2 that is produced from the manufacturing of blue hydrogen.
