Mining sector in Bangladesh plays a crucial role in its socio-economic development, with the BCM being a sole contributor. In addition to the Maddhapara granite mine, Barapukuria serves as one of the primary mining operations in the country, focusing on coal extraction. Geologically, Bangladesh exhibits diverse rock formations, including folded sedimentary rocks in the northern, northeastern, and eastern regions and uplifted Pleistocene residuum in the northwest, mid-north, and east. The country possesses approximately 3 billion tonnes of bituminous coal reserves, known for their low sulfur content, high calorific value, and low ash composition (Hossain et al., 2015). These reserves are distributed across five identified mines: Khalashpir, Barapukuria, Phulbari, Dighipara, and Jamalganj (Hossain et al., 2015). The presence of such reserves highlights the economic significance of coal mining in Bangladesh. Despite its contributions to industrial growth and energy production, coal mining also presents substantial environmental concerns that cannot be overlooked.
