Scientists examined the responses from Omicron and Delta to small proteins called interferons, which act like highway flares that alert innate immune cells to invaders. Delta was masterful at subduing the interferon response—but Omicron was terrible. It actually activated interferon signaling.

Researchers do not yet know how this change came about. At least 11 of the coronavirus’s 26 proteins interact with the interferon system, and many of those are mutated in Omicron. But even without knowing the exact mechanism, scientists can see hints of the consequences of this change.

Because the lungs are characterized by a more pronounced interferon response than the upper respiratory tract, Omicron’s vulnerability to that response may prevent it from spreading to the deeper organ. “It makes biological sense for what we see,” says Martin Michaelis, a biologist at the University of Kent in England, who analyzed how Omicron interacts with interferon in a paper published in Cell Research. “Omicron seems to be less capable of making it further into the body and into the lungs to cause severe disease.”

Moreover, Omicron viruses are less effective at antagonizing the host cell interferon response, which may explain why they cause less severe disease.

The focus that Synairgen are targetting i.e. (see SG018) is clearly ideal and excited to see the results.

Matterhorn, I have thought for a while that Tom Wilkinson had the unblinded results on Friday 17 December 2021.

Everything from this date that has been heard from Synairgen has only been positive noises. This can only draw me to one irrefutable conclusion

Great post TraderBuckie - Anyone who has ever invested over the years, knows only so well how true your statement is. We have all bad shares we have invested heavily in and kept thinking the corner will be eventually arrive.

IFN-beta is a naturally-occurring protein which orchestrates the body's antiviral responses. It is a well-tolerated drug and there is growing evidence that deficiency in IFN-beta production in the lungs could put vulnerable patient groups at risk of developing severe lower respiratory tract disease during respiratory viral infections.

Singh has recently received a San Antonio Medical Foundation grant to see what happens when more interferon is added to the lungs, and compare that with other ongoing studies blocking interferon. If the studies ultimately confirm interferon’s positive role in marshalling macrophages early in infection, it could potentially lead to interferon-based therapies for COVID-19. These have been tried for other diseases, and so could move quickly to clinical trials.

“In my opinion, the potential applications don’t stop at COVID-19,” Kaushal says. “It’s quite likely that the next pandemic in the next 10 years or so will be caused by another coronavirus. So having all this knowledge is going to be very critical.”
