In a nation already grappling with economic challenges, Eskom's decision to implement Stage 6 load shedding this week will be catastrophic for an already battered economy, experts have warned.
While the Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa at a press briefing today attributed this drastic measure to "ramped up maintenance", sceptics see a more sinister undercurrent.
The staggering R30 billion and counting spent on diesel this year alone paints a picture of an institution scrambling to keep the lights on, quite literally.
And this on the back of startling revelations by the National Treasury that there was budget deficit of R143.8 billion for July, the most significant since 2004, and far surpassing the R115.5 billion economists had predicted.
This gaping hole in South Africa’s finances, coupled with whispers of impending tax hikes, sets a grim stage for the average South African.

Sumitomo Electric will supply an 8-hour duration vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) to a recently-established municipal power company in Niigata, Japan.
Japanese engineering, materials and professional services group Sumitomo Electric said this morning that it has received an order for a 1MW/8MWh VRFB energy storage system from Kashiwazaki Ideal & Realistic Energy (Kashiwazaki IR).
The long-duration energy storage (LDES) system will be installed at the site of a public sewage treatment plant in Kashiwazaki City in Niigata Prefecture. The city is located on the northern Japan sea coastal side of Honshu, about a four hour drive from Tokyo.
The city, a traditional home to petroleum refining and nuclear power industries, is pursuing a decarbonisation agenda focused on renewable energy and nuclear, to which it is seeking to add energy storage resources.
The flow battery installation will help integrate variable renewable energy (VRE) generation onto the grid while helping stabilise operation of the network. At the same time, it will promote municipal goals of increasing Kashiwazaki’s local energy self-sufficiency and supporting industrial growth.
The project is scheduled to enter commercial operation in March 2024.
The Fire Safety Working Group, to be comprised of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Department of Public Service, and the Department of State.
The Fire Safety Working Group will conduct a root cause and emergency response analysis to evaluate and identify the cause and effect of the battery storage fires. Beyond the cause of the fire, the focus will include evaluation of air monitoring results and other potential community impacts. In addition, on-site inspections of energy storage facilities will be organized to examine the condition of batteries and verify on-site fire suppression equipment and emergency-response plans at operational BESS facilities.
The recommendations developed by the Fire Safety Working Group will be shared with the New York City Fire Department, National Fire Protection Association, International Code Council, the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council and Underwriters Laboratories.
The fires in question occurred between May 31st and July 27th in Suffolk, Orange and Jefferson counties and come at a time when battery storage siting and development is rapidly expanding on Long Island. Growth of these systems is attributable in part to energy storage being identified as a critical component in the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The Act initially called for 3 GW of storage by 2030, a goal that ultimately increased to 6 GW of storage by 2030, enough to represent 20 percent of the peak electricity load of New York State. News of the fires triggered immediate scrutiny, including editorials calling for local boards to pause and revisit battery storage proposals and battery storage codes pending the results of the Fire Safety Working Group’s investigation.
The model Battery Energy Storage System Law developed by NYSERDA, and adopted almost verbatim by several Towns, includes a number of fire-safety provisions, including development of fire safety compliance plans, emergency operations plans, compliance with fire-related building and electric codes, and specific access parameters for local fire departments. It will be interesting to follow the recommendations of the Fire Safety Working Group and how they impact local regulation of BESS facilities and the development of energy storage.

In anticipation of a Garnet shakeout?
"On the basis that Garnet will own 60% of the issued share capital of EHL, it shall have the right to appoint a majority of board members to EHL."
Didn't take long!
From MUST RNS
"The Company has entered into negotiations with the shareholders of VRFB-H, being BMN and Acacia, in respect to renegotiating the terms under which the Company would acquire their interests in VRFB-H. Based on a successful conclusion of those negotiations it is the intention of the Company to proceed to Readmission based on this acquisition."
EHL will probably require additional funding in the interim period to an alternative listing, will BMN be able to participate or will BMN suffer dilution?
Correct me if I'm wrong but we (BMN) never had control of Enerox.
Austrian energy supplier Burgerland Energie has started building a 300 MWh storage project based on the “Organic SolidFlow” technology developed by Germany-based specialist CMBlu.
The system is based on high-performance organic energy storage molecules. The material used is lignin, which can be sourced as a by-product from pulp mills. It is filled into two separate tanks and combined for a biochemical reaction in a special unit.
The material is organic, non-flammable, non-explosive, and can live through more than 10,000 charging cycles. The flow battery system has a multi-cell stack design and is only really suitable for stationary storage applications, but it is easily scalable to the gigawatt level.
The project is located in Schattendorf, Burgenland, eastern Austria, and is connected to a hybrid photovoltaic wind power plant. With the construction of the storage facility, the technology will be used in the field for the first time.
“One could have made it easy for oneself and rely on lithium-ion storage,” said Burgerland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil. “But that would not have fitted in with our attitude that we want to generate energy from natural and fair resources. Storage solutions, where we accept the exploitation of mines and other continents, are not the social image that we will accept in the course of an energy transition. That's why we chose a research collaboration with CMBlu to achieve and build a European model.”
Stephan Sharma, CEO of Burgenland Energie, said the goal is to supply electricity from wind and sun around the clock. He also warned that there is always the danger of under and over-coverage with a lot of photovoltaics and wind power on the grid.
“To compensate for this for an energy-independent system, we need a storage volume of around 300 MWh by 2030,” he added.
The storage system is tested directly at the hybrid power plant. Burgenland Energie completed the 15 MW photovoltaic system at the beginning of the year. The “Organic-SolidFlow” battery connected to the solar park is initially located as a “battery lab” in a 40-foot, air-conditioned and location-independent container. The other batteries will then be installed at different locations.
CMBlu was among the winners of the 2018 pv magazine Annual Award for its organic flow battery tech.

Re: only 10 employees, it looks to me that MK Plus are handling the commercialisation while the iP and development is occurring at Tohoku and Kyoto Universities.
Was filed yesterday but the cessation date was in 2020.
MUST investors might disagree!

Is BMN still involved with VERL?

I think Orion could be holding out for clarification of the MUST situation, it is possible with an above 50% position and a lack of Rule 9 waiver, Garnet could end up being obliged to make an offer for Cellcube.

... If (i) the full amount of the 2023 CLNs has not been raised by 30 April 2023; (ii) the full amount has been raised, but the Company has not obtained binding commitments of at least US$15m towards the Fundraise (defined below), nor funded Enerox with another US$1m until the end of June 2023, in each case by 31 May 2023; or (iii) the Company has not obtained approval of its proposed prospectus in relation to the Fundraise by the 30 June 2023, Garnet will have an option to terminate the Garnet Acquisition, and upon investing a minimum of US$3.5m into EHL, take a controlling position in EHL. In such circumstances the Company may still choose to complete the Acquisition (Stage 1), Acquisition (Stage 2) and Acquisition (Stage 3) and continue to Readmission but only with its minority position in EHL which would be approximately 46.4%.
When can we expect the " further statement" flagged in the last RNS?
As time ticks on what is the likelihood of Garnet taking the majority holding of EHL?
To merely speculate against FM is thoughtcrime!
