New investments in coal logistics have been announced in the past few weeks, raising hopes that the bottleneck in Southern Africa’s transport infrastructure which is strangling coal exports is beginning to ease.
"Transnet is also studying options for coal exports in the Eastern Cape, its spokesman confirms . Elitheni Coal plans to ship about 2Mt/year of coal in containers through East London. Transnet is considering the environmental impact of doing so, as well as on key customers like DaimlerChrysler."
