What does ‘net zero' mean?
Net zero refers to achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. There are two different routes to achieving net zero, which work in tandem: reducing existing emissions and actively removing greenhouse gases.

A gross-zero target would mean reducing all emissions to zero. This is not realistic, so instead the net-zero target recognises that there will be some emissions but that these need to be fully offset, predominantly through natural carbon sinks such as oceans and forests. (In the future, it may be possible to use artificial carbon sinks to increase carbon removal, research into these technologies is ongoing.)

When the amount of carbon emissions produced are cancelled out by the amount removed, the UK will be a net-zero emitter. The lower the emissions, the easier this becomes.

The importance of this case? Why is this so important if UKOG, as some keep saying, are producing a dribble? The swampy's are worried about something with UKOG, and it's not a dribble.

Oh yes Ms Finch - the one who was trying to use earthquakes as a reason for refusal... even though the BGS had already concluded that the earthquakes had not been induced by drilling.

Summary of BGS report

A sequence of small earthquakes was recorded near Newdigate, Surrey, between 1 April and 31 August 2018. The largest had a magnitude 3.0 ML and four others had magnitudes of greater than 2.0 ML. Seven of the earthquakes were felt by people living nearby and there was public concern that the earthquake sequence may have been triggered by nearby hydrocarbon exploration and production. Five temporary sensors were installed by BGS in mid-July close to the epicentral area. Our analysis shows that earthquake epicentres are tightly clustered in a 3 km by 3 km source zone that lies between the villages of Newdigate and Charlwood, and at a distance of approximately 8km from the Brockham oil field. Depths calculated using only recordings at distances of up to 10km suggest that the events are most likely to have occurred at depths of approximately 2 km. We use the criteria suggested by Davis and Frohlich (1993) to assess the available evidence that the earthquake sequence may have been induced. This suggests that the events are unlikely to have been induced.

" A Member of the Committee felt that the discussion on this application was disturbing and highlighted to Members that the application was refused on non-planning reasons then the cost of appeal, if successful, would be significant. Further to this in regards to the motion for refusal, the Member stated that there was a lack of highway reasons, that citing impact on businesses was not logical, that oil wells were regulated nationally, that nothing can stop clear felling of woodland if a licence was granted for that, and that the public had provided an emotional response."
