I don’t disagree with you that FI is a great opportunity with quality oil and low taxes. The problem is that it has no existing infrastructure and is a long way from anywhere. Harbour have been very disciplined to date in their investment strategy and have focussed on buying producing assets with immediate returns, as opposed to projects which will not yield cash for 3-4 years.
I am hopeful that they will change strategy, but as with most Private Equity type businesses they have to date been focussed on short term cash generation.
What I believe is becoming clear is that there has been a massive underinvestment in upstream oil and gas over last 5 years and Covid has reduced investment further. Even with increased renewables, we are likely approaching an oil shortage in 2023-2026 and Sealion could look very attractive in a year or so. The question is will Rockhopper survive long enough to join the party.
