larsson2 - companies don’t set their own market cap! The market determines the price at which the shares trade, and the market cap is simply the share value x the number of shares in issue. This really is the most basic of concepts for anyone interested in investing in shares, never mind speculating on AIM oilers...

Fat finger stories are always good for a laugh. A former colleague of mine could have cornered the bund in his first week on the desk after moving from a sell-side job. He wanted a million nominal, not a million contracts of €100k each... If the broker hadn’t called someone else on the desk to confirm I think we’d have had Buba on the line next.

It’s not hard. The SP has fallen today because the many short-term punters expecting to earn life-changing gains by taking limited risk with non-life-changing sums of money have been disappointed, and are selling up and moving on. That’s all.

Posts in the last week or so observing how much was already “in the price” were quickly dismissed by happy-clappy rainbow chasers. The same chasers who are now spouting uninformed drivel about MM manipulation, regulatory failure etc etc etc.

Seriously? You posted yesterday that you’d bought 100k at 2.6p, so you’re about £120 down.

I’m genuinely sorry if that £120 hurts, but perhaps investing in AIM oilers isn’t for you.

Many disappointed punters posting today. Both those who bought in expectation of an immediate leap on the first tanker sighting, and those who thought they were being prudent by waiting until (just) after the tanker was seen. Through their own actions, both groups ensured that the SP was pregnant with anticipated gains.

What we have seen since the initial flourish yesterday is downward pressure on the SP from disappointed punters selling up. Their dreams of making a life-changing gain by taking a limited risk with a non-life-changing sum of money cruelly dashed...

I think this is all irrelevant for longer term holders though. The EWT news is good; the underlying Weald story is stronger as a result. It’s a time for ignoring the noise created by the easy money punters.

salmonsandwich - isn’t it funny that we never hear from those buyers though? According to posts, pretty much everyone on this board has an average in-price of 1.3p or less....!

Jungerns - you are forgetting that this is the Alice in Wonderland world of LSE where MM’s - acting in concert with unlimited capital, perfect foresight, inside information and no regulatory constraints - LOWER the price they offer for shares when they need more to fill orders.

At times the drivel posted here on this subject is (sadly) beyond parody..!

I think that Hoyer were contracted to UKOG for BB. HHDL have previously used BKP, so nothing noteworthy I think.

Swervington that’s nothing but uninformed nonsense. MM’s like one thing: FLOW. They make their money from the spread. If you don’t know much about a topic, why post on it?

The price action seen after todays positive RNS serves to remind us that there is a lot of upside priced in already at a market cap north of £100m. Punters expecting an immediate leap in SP on the first confirmed sighting of a tanker (the strong possibility of which was heavily trailed in advance...) were evidently deluded. This should surprise no-one.

The news is very good though and holders can all feel positive that the companies earnings potential is catching up with its valuation. In the long run it is earnings that will drive the price. Let’s hope that the EWT process continues to surprise on the upside...

Sorry but that’s just nonsense. The MM’s are not in any way responsible for Identifying & reporting buys and sells. The trades go through and whoever is LSE’s data provider has an algorithm that is supposed to determine whether they are buys or sells by looking at the price, recent volume etc. It’s intended to be reasonably accurate over time, but it wont get every trade the right way around.

Nothing to do with MM’s. No conspiracy or skulduggery here. Please move on folks...

For the record...

The number of shares a company has in issue has no impact at all on how its share price can move. Companies with 5bn shares in existence are no more or less likely to see their SP double (or halve...) than companies with 300m share in issue. The important variable is the market capitalisation which represents investors view of the value of the company. If that valuation trebles then BY DEFINITION the share price will treble as it is nothing more than the mcap divided by the number of shares in issue.

Posters expressing disquiet over the absolute number of shares in issue are entirely misguided. Their concerns reveal their lack of basic knowledge, and can be safely disregarded.

jungerns - don't you be posting in here with your "knowledge", your "experience" and your "common sense". They are not welcome...!

Compared to the silly-season last summer I think that the level of MM-related drivel posted here is actually lower. I propose a game of LSE/MM bingo. 2 points for any of these phrases, +5 points for a full house:

"SP is being walked up/down"
"Tree shake"
"Trying to sniff out your stops"
"Brakes are on, price is being held for..."
"Rinse and repeat"
"MM's are trying to steal your shares"
"MM's are putting through buys as sells"

I find it all quite entertaining, but posters without a capital markets background should feel confident that all of this stuff can be safely ignored...

That is the most meaningful contribution you have made.

Why?

If the company did a 10:1 consolidation resulting in 500m shares valued at 23p each, would your “issue” be gone?

To be clear:

- the market cap of the company would be unchanged
- the value of your holding would be unchanged

"Locked in" how exactly? I suspect you are free to go at any point...!
