Sustainable buildings
Building on our Energy Savings
Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) surveys and
Energy Performance Certificate update
in 2015, we are producing individual
action plans for each of our buildings
to identify the full range of energy and
water efficiency opportunities. Over 2017
we will bring this into a coordinated plan
aiming to deliver significant energy and
water efficiency improvements. As well
as complying with the 2018 minimum
energy efficiency standards and the
2019 ESOS deadline, this will deliver
significant carbon reductions across our
existing estate. Ahead of this we have
continued our ongoing £21 million LED
lighting upgrade, and installed a range
of new technologies to understand how
best to achieve the energy and water
efficiency improvements. During 2016 we
deployed wireless networked building
controls, installed PV panels and air-source
heat pumps, and assessed a range of
other potential technologies including
demand side response and battery
storage. This activity has helped deliver
a 10% reduction in energy per bed from
2014-2015 and a 4.8% reduction from
2015-2016.
