One thing I've had to learn about investing is when to sell and accept a short-term loss, in the hope of a better opportunity elsewhere.
Hate doing it and, luckily, haven't had to very often.
I seem to do better buying when things are trending up.
Can't get the hang of selling when they're trending down yet (mostly have to sit on my hands and watch).
Only things I've held longer than three years now are investment funds.
Even BP (which is way over my 5% portfolio limit, although I only trade bits of it at a time).
