Cadent Gas Launches Report on “Hydrogen is a Viable Option for Future Transport Fuel”

Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has welcomed the findings of a major report which maps out routes to delivering hydrogen at volume as a transport fuel.

The report – Network-supplied hydrogen unlocks low carbon transport opportunities – was launched by Cadent, the UK’s biggest gas distribution network, at a major hydrogen showcase event in Runcorn, organised by Halton Borough Council.

Key findings include:

Grid-supplied hydrogen is the most cost-effective way of supplying hydrogen transport fuel at the required volume – up to 70 per cent cheaper than other possible means.
The concept to ‘piggyback’ on the larger hydrogen power and heat project advancing in North West England (HyNet), to create options for low carbon transport, is viable.
A range of options – including battery electric vehicles (BEV) is needed, but exclusive focus on BEVs will result in a shortfall in the required renewable electricity of at least 32%.
The report was presented and discussed in Runcorn yesterday, at an event to showcase several hydrogen projects that position North West as pioneers in this technology.

Ed Syson, chief safety and strategy officer at Cadent, said: “We carried out this study because there is an obvious desire and enthusiasm in the North West to think big and take a lead in finding low-cost ways to cut emissions. Industry and policy makers can now be assured that HyNet can deliver the bulk volume of hydrogen needed in the North West, via a pipeline network. Distributing it this way cuts the costs considerably and means hydrogen can complement electricity and advanced biofuels as an attractive option for future fuel.”

In an independent socio-economic study conducted within the ALKAMMONIA project by the eminent Paul Scherrer Institute of Switzerland, the Institute confirmed “the ALKAMMONIA system provides a viable alternative to current diesel generators”, supporting AFC Energy’s early assertion that the Company’s fuel cell systems are able to hit a price point that could favourably compete, taking into account economies of scale and subject to localised ammonia supply logistics, with conventional diesel generation in today’s market.

AFC Energy (AIM: AFC), the leading alkaline fuel cell power company, announces the successful results of an 18 month Ammonia to Power (“A2P”) trial and confirms plans to conclude work on the business case and engineering of an integrated, scalable ammonia fuelled clean power generator.

The system, which expects to utilise existing ammonia cracking technology alongside AFC Energy’s proprietary fuel cell system, would enable the use of AFC Energy’s fuel cells in off-grid locations where electricity would be generated through the consumption of ammonia; a low-cost commodity chemical that is readily available in industrialised and developing countries.

Highlights

Proof of concept for the use of AFC Energy’s fuel cell system with cracked ammonia fuel to provide clean electrical power in remote, off-grid applications where premium power prices are available
Negligible difference in fuel-cell performance witnessed between direct hydrogen gas sourced from industrial gas companies, and that sourced from cracked ammonia
Ability to utilise “off the shelf” ammonia crackers readily available in today’s market without the need for further research and development costs that would otherwise likely delay go to market strategies
Completion of full third-party safety review demonstrates safe operation of the integrated system
Clear ability to scale up power production with increases in the size of the cracker capacity and fuel cell to deliver multi-MW solutions for powering remote or off-grid communities
Work has commenced on the design and business case for an integrated power system that is fully consistent with AFC Energy’s approach to the identification of third party hydrogen solutions within its off-grid power generation unit
Uses commodity ammonia as fuel that is readily available as one of the world’s most produced inorganic chemicals for its use as a fertiliser.
The displacement of off-grid stationary diesel gensets is a stated commercial opportunity for the deployment of AFC Energy’s alkaline fuel cell system. The availability of low-cost hydrogen gas however has been an obstacle to deployment to date of fuel cells in more remote, off-grid locations.

AFC Energy’s ability to accept lower grade, and therefore lower cost, hydrogen derived from readily available ammonia is a key advantage not only to the off-grid deployment of its fuel cell system, but also in the logistical sourcing of the fuel in locations where hydrogen is not easily available.

Initiated under the EU Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Jont Undertaking (FCH JU) co-funded ALKAMMONIA project, AFC Energy has successfully demonstrated an integrated power generation unit at its UK facilities, bringing together a small-scale ammonia cracker with the Company’s own alkaline fuel cell system.

The scientists also estimate that the energy required to mine materials for EV batteries will take 22.5 TWh (TeraWatt-hours) of energy, equivalent to six per cent of the UK’s current annual electrical usage. Just mining the battery materials necessary to replace the two billion cars in the world would require four times the UK’s total annual electrical output.

Once all those EVs have been built, the letter highlights further concerns. Current estimates put the extra power required for all UK cars to be electric at 63 TWh a year, a 20 per cent increase over current generation levels. To produce this extra electricity with environmentally friendly wind farms would require and extra 6,000 turbines, the production of which would require a “years’ worth of total global copper supply and 10 years’ worth of global neodymium”.

While the letter highlights making all cars electric and environmentally friendly is a “laudable” aim, it warns that the “global supply of raw materials must drastically change to accommodate not just the UK’s transformation to a low carbon economy, but the whole world’s.”

A team of scientists has written to the Committee of Climate Change warning that if the UK’s 31.5 million cars are replaced by electric vehicles by 2050, as is currently planned by the Government, this will require almost twice the current annual global supply of cobalt.

The researchers have also calculated that based on the latest ‘811’ battery technology (80 per cent nickel, 10 per cent cobalt, 10 per cent manganese), UK demand for EV batteries will require almost the total amount of neodymium produced globally each year, three quarter’s of the world’s lithium, and “at least half” of the world’s copper.

Queensland’s burgeoning renewable hydrogen industry will be showcased to international markets at the World Hydrogen Technologies Convention in Tokyo this week. Travelling to Japan for the conference, to meet key players in the country’s hydrogen industry and to launch the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy internationally, Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said Queensland aimed to be the hydrogen exporter of choice to the Asia Pacific region. “The World Hydrogen Technologies Convention, attended by more than 600 international delegates from 45 countries, provides our state with a global platform to show there’s no better place to develop a hydrogen industry than Queensland,” Mr Dick said. “Hydrogen means jobs. Our government’s attendance at the world’s largest hydrogen technologies convention sends a signal to the international community that we welcome hydrogen investment. “Our world-leading renewable energy resources, existing gas pipeline infrastructure, first-class export facilities and highly-skilled workforce put us in a strong position to grow our industry in domestic and international markets.” “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to speak at the convention to outline the steps the Palaszczuk Government is taking to support this new sector through our $19 million Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024.”

SynBio General Manager (Renewable Technologies) Ben Tabulo said the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy was a significant step in the right direction.

“We are supporting this strategy as we believe it will have great benefits for Queensland,” Mr Tabulo said.

“The production of hydrogen is a key priority for Gladstone. Apart from enormous export opportunities, the investment announced today will accelerate access to cheaper domestically produced hydrogen.

“Lower energy costs mean increased productivity and more jobs. This is why SynBio and Northern Oil are currently working with the CSIRO to develop a technology that will capture hydrogen from our refining processes.

“Excess hydrogen will be made available for consumption within a hydrogen fuel cell to produce electricity to run our pilot plant.

“It’s green and clean, but importantly it makes strong economic sense,” he said.

“We applaud the efforts of the Queensland Government and look forward to seeing a sustainable and competitive hydrogen industry in Queensland.”
