Air Products adds biomass to gasification expansion

The company abandoned two waste gasification plants at a loss of about €876m two years ago

US-based Air Products has expanded its gasification portfolio with a deal to buy General Electric’s (GE’s) technology.

The move, which was announced yesterday, appears to focus on using the technology to process biomass, coal and petcoke through gasification.

No financial terms were revealed for the deal, which Air Products said was designed to complement the gasification technology it bought from Shell in January.

Shell’s technology was focused on coal gasification as well as a portfolio of patents for "liquid residue" gasification technology.

Air Products said its new portfolio of technology would allow it to offer syngas for the chemicals, fuels, power and refining sectors.

The new deal includes more than 1,000 patents relating to GE’s gasification technology, which has been deployed at more than 90 sites, with about 240 gasifiers supplying about 36,000MWth of syngas production.

There is no mention of using waste as a feedstock by Air Products, which in April 2016 said it would lose about €876m after scrapping development of two UK-based waste gasification plants, known as Tees Valley 1 (TV1) and Tees Valley 2 (TV2).

Currently, the "unused" equipment from the sites is being sold off.

Under Air Product’s new deal with GE, it has also taken over GE’s share of its 50/50 joint venture with China Shenhua Coal to Liquid and Chemical Company, which is subsidiary of China Energy Group.

The JV, formed in 2011, provides technologies for gasification projects in China.

I am reading it as positive and like the references to plug and play, denora and containerisation. they are doing what they said they were going to do. i picked up some more last week and see no reason why we cant anticipate some good rns to year end.

badprophet, with respect your post suggests a lack of research into where PHE are at the moment. we have truly independent verification and work is going on in the background with all things commercial so in actual fact we are on track albeit behind where we thought we would be say six months ago. glah

am with you stokey. i guess part of the answer lies in cost reduction with increased production, partly with cheaper hydrogen fuel and partly with design and procurement efficiency. also in the mix is the do nothing approach which will damage the environment.

I have just been looking into John Rennocks and picked up the following which athough back in 1996 during his time as FD of Powergen is interesting:

One source said yesterday: "He has had a Midas touch. He has done some pretty shrewd things and driven the company in the right direction. Part of the glitter of PowerGen is down to the fact that he has done a good job."

I also looked into Blufield Solar Income and couldnt see anything that worried me unduly.

That said I would still like an update of some sort.

I am with Risky. Like all holders I am not impressed with the drop but nothing has changed and to the best of my knowledge the company has done what they said they were going to do. Clearly there is work to with regards to RNS within the last few weeks of 2018. GLAH

Motoring groups have condemned the government's decision to cut subsidies for buying greener cars.

From 9 November, grants for new plug-in hybrids will be scrapped, while discounts on all-electric cars will be cut from £4,500 to £3,500.

Cash incentives have been offered since 2011 to help promote cleaner cars and meet emissions targets.

The RAC and AA motoring groups said the change was a backward step, and the SMMT trade body called it "astounding".

The Department for Transport (DfT) said that the Plug-in Car Grant was introduced seven years ago to help the market become established.

It was now time to focus support on zero-emission models such as pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars, the DfT added.
