Unless it catches them unawares, which is the thing. 40% doesn't come at once. It starts off at 1%, then 2%, then it snowballs. As it does so the share price explodes and it becomes progressively and then exponentially more expensive to acquire. What I've said here before is that in order to acquire Quadrise as a shipping or power company for example, you have to get more value out of it by owning it than by buying it - and it can be difficult to sell fuel to your competitors, it's a conflict of interest. For me, the most likely acquisition scenario is an independent spinoff run by an independent consortium like all the IT technologies (USB, HDMI, Blu-ray etc) or the airline alliances.
