RE: Why do companies pay special dividends?5 Sep 2021 09:47
To reply to a few posters.
Whitebuffalo.. Great post (Sat 22.13). Decisions, decisions, decisions. I guess the answer to the dilemma many will face is, we will only know after the event!! Perhaps we could all toss a coin. Possibly, as good a method as any.
Discodave.. your post (Sat 23.12). Had you thought of disabling auto re-invest, and monitoring the situation carefully and regularly yourself.? Given, that you have the time and inclination to do this, you may get the best of both worlds?
Personally, i always prefer to be holding all the cards myself, but i have the time to monitor situations, regularly.
Bonddivi. (Sat 23.58) Need a vote, in the mix, which would preclude, your scenario. Likely route, (which amounts to similar) is, when announcement is made it will be to shareholders at close of play the previous day. Thus avoiding carnage on the market and the unfairness of people buying in and instantly getting the divi that will come shortly afterwards. So, it will likely go in line with SteJSteJ ( today 00.08).
Other thoughts. Some companies (for their tax purposes) actually pay a 'dividend', but wrap it as a capital repayment. Ala Glencore. RR (when they distributed) were similar, by using 'c' shares.
More than 1 way to skin a cat.
Interesting debate. Interesting times. Interesting developments here for remainder of year (and beyond!!).
