Presentation Abstract:
Past (about 1.4 billion years) and future of the Beetaloo
Geographically extensive and thick sedimentary basins remain relatively poorly described in parts of the Northern Territory due to relatively limited historical exploration drilling. The greater McArthur Basin is one example of an underexplored basin that has been subject to a substantial ramp-up in exploration activity since around 2010. The primary targets of exploration drilling since 2010 have been organic-rich shales of the Amungee Member of the Velkerri Formation, within the Roper Group of the Beetaloo Sub-basin.
Although there is broad agreement regarding the gross depositional environments (encompassing deltaic to marine) of formations within the Roper Group, these models are not necessarily indicative of the prevailing conditions during deposition of the organic-rich shales of the Amungee Member. The Proterozoic Earth was very different to the modern Earth, and this is likely to have had a substantial impact on deposition.
The Beetaloo, however, isn’t just geologically interesting; it also a frontier basin with proven prospectivity and multi-TCF potential. The scale of the Beetaloo is immense and is of potential significance to the Northern Territory and Australia for economic and energy security reasons, and to the operators active in the Beetaloo for the potential for value creation.
