RE: SP Vs Divs28 Jul 2024 15:28
It looks like I am in a very similar position using dividend funds to fund retirement as well as having similar capital gain loss versus dividends. To me it all depends on ones individual situation. The problem, obviously, with receiving decent income while suffering capital losses, is that if you decide to take a loss on the capital the loss will be there "forever" and you face the challenge to replace the income. If you are in a jurisdiction with capital gains tax where losses can be offset by profits that makes the situation, from a portfolio perspective, much better. I am in a jurisdiction which has no capital gains tax and dividends is simply taxed as income so I am in a less favourable situation from that perspective. But at the end of the day spreading the risk, systematically transitioning to more fixed income as one gets older is ultimately probably the proper approach. In regards to HFEL to buy more, stay or sell is purely an individual decision. Personally I am not adding (yet) but I also have a smaller allocation to relatively risk-on EM funds like this.
