A LONO is issued by an engine manufacturer saying they do not object to the fuel being used in their engine type. Once a LONO is granted to an engine type, then any shipping company who uses that engine can also use the fuel without completing another LONO.
What each shipping company does need, is a clear picture of the economics/practicalities of using MSAR and in the case of Maersk and now MSC, these questions can be answered by an “operational trial” alongside the LONO trial.
In short, other shipping companies may carry out their own “operational trials” to see if the economics stack up for them, but once a full LONO exists then it does not have to be repeated.
Different engine types/models, which some of the bulker shippers have, would of course require their own separate LONO as it’s not the same engine as the MSC LONO engine/s.
