The poverty today is not as bad as it was, however, the system did support eduction and health care more generously, I cannot recall anyone leaving primary school unable to write etc, and there were a thing called mental hospitals with beds and trained staff. I have doings with education. In my doings I come across Special Schools for SEN pupils. They are swamped by children with special needs at numbers beyond previous or predicted models. The overflow is caused by migrant families; cultural practices whereby the societal rules for consanguinity are different to western European practice and create through intermarriage genetic problems. Hence, with a large influx of people that have lots of children with a high percentage of children that require large sums of money for care and education it is costly- there are some classes where teachers and assistants outnumber students. There are other societal costs too, medication, housing etc. The inbreeding and its issues is known, but never discussed. However, there are those that work in the schools that from these communities and openly recognise the problem. This is one of the many real problems not discussed by politicians, were they to initiate a large focussed education campaign about the problems of sanguinity, for not too much money they could save the social care and schools budgets huge sums. This is just one small issue, if honest dialogue were to take place many costly issues could be resolved. However, for politicians its far easier to promise or indeed actually throw millions at issues, these are then mismanaged with consultants, lackeys and the downright dishonest trousering the money. Now academy schools, after consultation, trust management fees and increased wages for headteachers the school budgets are less than they were when supported by LA services which they now have to buy in, there are many tears of woe that I hear on that when I go to schools. Across the board the social support systems are swamped by demand and in many cases by generational indoctrinated sponger families (I know some). Those unfortunate enough to be truly needy suffer because of all this. Every political initiative is a sound bite for politicians who have very little knowledge of the areas they make decisions on. I have a reasonable understanding of the condition- I have had consultant psychiatrists say that for a non professional I have remarkable depth of knowledge on the subject, particularly with regard to palliative treatments, the efficacy of various drug or treatment regimes, spotting identifying symptoms on relapse and providing support.I was a carer for 50 years, read much on the subject, spent time in wards, met other schizophrenics, their families and many medical professionals. What that experience has taught me is that it is a very serious disease and the victims and their families are stigmatised, in the past quite considerably so. However, in recent times mental health conditions are recognised more as an illness by society. Certainly no one would use other serious conditions to imply insult to others using illnesses such as cancer, MS, Parkinson’s etc. So as its education on the subject that you wish to provide me, I thought it only reasonable to reciprocate and say that I find it wholly unpleasant to see a desease that has caused, and causes, so much distress to the victims and their families used as a tool to try to denigrate another- that sort of thing nourishes and promulgates the social stigma with mental illness that is such societal problem. I genuinely hope that you might consider your language, it was very wrong and insulting to those dealing with the issue.
