I must be missing the point here.
My thoughts were that omicron is replacing delta, that’s fact. So if omicron is less severe and less hospitalisations which data suggests that it is so far then there’s no reason why we can’t cope. I understand slowing the spread to help the curve instead of a spike but if we slow it too much then it gives virus more opportunity to mutate rather than exhaust itself, science doesn’t always beat nature. I think South Africa will be virtually Covid free in the near future, provided omicron can’t be caught again in short span.
But we need more data first, it’s becoming more apparent that only 20-40s are more affected in south Africa but that’s due to vaccines I believe. With only 7.9% vaccination status you can see why. 1200 people hospitalised with omicron and only 4 need oxygen, also not noted if they have underlying conditions either.
Will try and look at all omicron figure tomorrow.
