Maputo — The Mozambican government has threatened to revoke mining licences and concessions that are not being used, reports Monday's issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”.
Speaking at a meeting with holders of mining licenses in Gondola district, in the central province of Manica, the National Director of Mines, Geraldo Valoi, said the government has identified all the mining concessions whose owners are not exploiting them, or are not complying with other legal requirements.
He warned that the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy is fully entitled to revoke mining licences in cases where the land is lying idle.
The government, he added, could not tolerate a situation where mineral resources, which should be contributing to national economic development are simply left lying in the ground.
