"Oil and gas company Neptune Energy on Thursday launched a feasibility study into plans for a large-scale offshore Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in the Dutch North Sea, with the potential to safely store 120-150 million tonnes of CO2.
Neptune will conduct the study in cooperation with its licence partners and CO2 emitters.
The study will assess the feasibility of injecting between 5 and 8 million tonnes of CO2 annually into the depleted gas fields around the Neptune-operated L10-A, L10-B, and L10-E areas.
If the project is developed, it will be one of the largest CCS facilities in the Dutch North Sea and could meet more than 50% of the CO2 reduction being targeted by the Dutch industrial sector, Neptune Energy said.
"The Dutch North Sea has the potential to become a ‘new energy hub’, given its existing infrastructure that connects offshore with onshore. It will also be home to the world’s first offshore green hydrogen pilot, PosHYdon, which Neptune’s Q13a platform will host," Neptune Energy said Thursday.
Lex de Groot, Managing Director of Neptune Energy in the Netherlands, said: “The first step is a feasibility study to confirm that CO2 can be handled and stored safely in these depleted gas reservoirs, using our existing infrastructure. We will engage with organizations and emitters to offer safe and competitively priced CO2 storage.
“As the largest offshore gas producer in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, we are well-positioned to help the Netherlands achieve its climate goals by using existing infrastructure to enable offshore CCS and offshore green hydrogen production.”
Jan Willem van Hoogstraten, CEO of Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN): “CCS is crucial for the Netherlands to achieve the Paris climate goals. We are already making great strides with the Porthos and Athos projects that want to store CO2 in empty gas fields off the coast of Rotterdam and IJmuiden respectively. This study by Neptune is another important step to convert the empty offshore gas fields into large-scale CO2 storage.
“Obviously, we are pleased to participate in projects of our joint venture partners that use existing infrastructure for the safe offshore storage of CO2.”
Neptune has also said that there is growing consensus that CCS will be required at scale to meet the ambitious targets set out by the Paris Agreement. In all scenarios, CCS is part of the solution to achieve the Netherlands’ goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 49 to 55% by 2030, it said.
"Neptune already has significant experience with CCS, having carried out a 14-year project on its K12-B platform offshore the Netherlands, reinjecting CO2 into the gas field. The project was carried out in partnership with TNO, the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research," the company said."

Hydrogen projects have already commenced in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, with Neptune Energy teaming up with Gasunie on plans for the world’s first offshore green hydrogen project; PosHYdon. This is a notable move with the aim being to gain experience of integrating working energy systems at sea and the production of hydrogen in an offshore environment. It is hoped that learnings from this project will be brought to an equivalent project in the UK. Along with increased investment in hydrogen and more comprehensive models being developed, regulatory alignment will also be needed to stimulate projects in this area. For real success, this should be done simultaneously across all energy types.

NEL Hydrogen to Deliver PosHYdon Electrolysis System
R&D. Yet another contract to supply to Denmark. Also some big partners involved so showcasing the product. 2021 up and running.
https://www.offshorewind.biz/2020/12/24/nel-hydrogen-to-deliver-poshydon-electrolysis-system/
Tyson, I hope this helps with the Nikola fog ? I would be delighted if NEL can do a deal with Nikola for the pure supply of hydrogen fuelling stations ( Nikola target 700 in 10 years ). Also I would say for me Nikola is only a very low % of the actual business and revenue stream the a global NEL are capable of providing. So I can take or leave Nikola deal , its not that important in the wider scheme of things. It is not the sole project that would make or break NEL.
Example in June the order book prior to Nikola's $30m was approx $48m. There were approx another $12-15m in other orders within 3 weeks excluding Nikolas 30m.
Currently I have an estimated order book of $60m+ , then add on the possible 30m from nikola. Thats just to July. There have been further rns's since, so the book value and actual supply should be higher than that.
“Mark is ‘Mr. Detail’ who knows all the automotive suppliers,” said John Tumasoz, who runs Very Independent Research and has been following Russell’s career for more than a decade. “He is not visionary. He’s the opposite of what Trevor is viewed as.”
To deliver its promise to shareholders and start producing trucks, Russell is trying to leverage Nikola’s technology-sharing relationships with GM and two European industrial powerhouses: German partner Robert Bosch Gmbh and Italy-based CNH Industrial NV’s Iveco unit. Russell also is hoping to find a partner to create a hydrogen fuelling network for its big rigs."
"Arizona Factory.
A battery-electric semi truck is due to go in production as part of a joint venture with Iveco by the end of next year in Ulm, Germany. Nikola also has a factory under construction in Coolidge, Arizona, where it hopes to build a fuel-cell semi truck by the end of 2023. To power those trucks, the Phoenix-based company hopes to move forward on building hydrogen fuelling stations across North America, with ground-breaking on the first sites scheduled for the second quarter.
When Russell was promoted to the role of CEO, he took over a company that had only a few of the pieces in place it needed to execute on all of its plans. But he was happy to take a back seat to Milton, the driving force behind Nikola’s aggressive strategy.
Now, with investors raising questions about the company’s ability to deliver and the relationship with GM under scrutiny, Russell is focusing on a few core priorities — even if that means abandoning a high-profile retail market vehicle like the Badger."

The hydrogen plant is expected to commence operations in 2021. Once production starts, Fertiberia will be able to use the hydrogen for its ammonia plant in Puertollano, and the resulting oxygen for its nitric acid unit.
In early November, Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a division of Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA (OSE:NEL), was unveiled as the preferred supplier of the electrolyser solution.
Since first announcing the Puertollano project in July this year, Iberdrola and Fertiberia have increased their appetite for green hydrogen and set the goal to install 800 MW of electrolyser capacity by 2027."
