Worth a watch for some background info on UK energy market, 45min long. RR do get a mention towards the end but not as the quickest/best solution. Surely the government has to take some action pretty quickly. If we have prolonged blackouts at any point the Uniparty will be out for a generation.

At least we have a clear date now for an SMR government announcement -26th Mar25 (rather than the vague sometime in spring). Gotta be worth an extra 10% to share price even if it is 5-10 years away. Did read in another article RR SMR is designed to be assembled in 500days, guess that that doesn’t uncle the groundwork’s etc.

Someone mentioned about the manufacturing of the reactors units for SMRs going abroad? I thought Sheffield Forgemasters had the certification to manufacture them? - and we’re a shoe-in as are UK government owned.

I’m aware of that, was just making a point on wind/solar. I consider nuclear to be green also. The cost & time over runs on large nuclear (especially EDF) don’t put them in the best light considering the amount this (& previous governments) have pis$@d away on other crap, SMRs should be seen as a calculated risk worth taking for possibly huge benefits if we/RR can get it right.

I automatically dismiss the view of anyone who claims wind/solar are cheaper than baseload coal/gas/nuclear as they are completely ignoring the cost of having the backup power plant that can fill in when it’s not sunny/windy etc. Anyone with any reasonable knowledge is aware that batteries are both too expensive and capacity storage wise completely insufficient for fill in grid wide for more than a few minutes ie useless. Nuclear may seem expensive per KW now compared to coal/gas but in 30years time or halfway through its life it’ll be regarded as fairly cheap I expect. France have much cheaper electricity costs than UK which has gone down the wind/solar route.

Even if it were true then I actually see this as good news for RR. Three SMR is just a drop in the ocean of what we need and would mean a much bigger slice for RR in my opinion. Also that Milli-idiot has finally seen some sense. A big chunk of the £66B investment from business that labour announced months ago was for data centres and they need reliable base load.

Think they should start with the £22 billion they have allocated to carbon capture and reallocate it to SMRs, that would actually address their climate change concern. From what I’ve read over the last few years I reckon RR will need commitments for around 20 SMR’s (includes international) to get things in motion. For the £22B you might get 8-10 SMRs, would be good if first mover gets a slight price reduction/kickback from subsequent orders. First SMR is likely to cost £3-£5B I reckon.

Don’t forget that the Czechs have also bought 20% of RR SMR, I don’t think we’ve seen a figure for that yet? Correct me if I’ve missed it, but based on Qatars £85m for 10% back in 2021, another 3 years of SMR development later, progression in multiple SMR competitions and the Czechs 20% has got to be worth at least £200m and possibly quite a bit higher.

I’m still of the believe that RR has the most practical SMR design, the least risky & is the furthest through the assessments. I think RR worked backwards & have got the max MW output from something that can still be regarded as an SMR and mostly factory built. The others are quite a bit smaller in MW so you would need more of them and have less conventual designs and hence are more risky. If they go with SMR I reckon RR will get the biggest slice along with a few from either Westinghouse or GE/Hitachi to keep the Americans happy. From our grid point of view speed of getting them up to producing power should be a deciding factor.

I set up a HL SIPP this year to reduce my capital gains bill, they did the basic rate claim top up. Looks like Barclays partners with AJ Bell on their SIPP so suspect basic rate top up would also be automatic, you’d probably have to claim for additional higher rate.

Some of my IAG are in an ISA so it does makes a difference to those as it’s the same 19% deduction taken. I do normally try to stay under the 40% threshold. Not this year tho as took some big capital gains before liebour’s budget.

It’s £35 to get the form done using the www.spanishtaxforms.co.uk link listed on the IAG website. So for me it’ll be worth filling out to get some of the dividend deduction back. Can’t do this until Feb tho.

Looks to me like uk residence won’t get any capital gains tax taken by Spanish authorities, but there is the requirement to submit a form. Interestingly from 1st Feb25 we should also be able to claim back part of the deduction they took from our Sep24 dividend payment. I’ve not sold any IAG yet but at some point I will and there will be a significant gain. Would be interesting to hear if any uk people have gone through the process previously.
