A prototype of the new single patient record (SPR) is expected by the “end of the year”, NHS England has said.
Ming Tang told the NHSE board on Tuesday that by December a model for the SPR will have been selected “for adoption and further development”.
The SPR – first announced in October 2024 and central to the technology pledges in the 10-Year Health Plan – is set to bring together all a patient’s medical records in one place. NHSE says the programme is “fundamental” to creating a modern NHS and will be “pivotal in driving the digital shift”.
It is intended to act as a “patient passport”, ensuring patients have a single and secure account of their data, which clinicians can also access to deliver care.
According to the plan, patients will be able to view their SPR on the NHS App by 2028.
Ministers have pledged to legislate so that every health and care provider has a duty to make the information they record about a patient available to that patient.
