​Energy Security and Sovereignty: Sanderson argues that the current geopolitical climate—specifically citing the Middle East crisis and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—highlights the vulnerability of Britain's energy policy. He suggests that relying on imported energy is no longer viable and that the UK must develop its own large-scale storage capabilities.

​The Dorset "Super-Cluster": The article highlights UKOG’s project in South Dorset, which aims to create a "Dorset Clean Energy Super-Cluster." This involves drilling into high-quality rock salt to create 19 massive underground caverns.

​Capacity and Scale: He describes the scale of these caverns as "twice the volume of St Paul's Cathedral." Collectively, they are designed to store significant amounts of hydrogen, which can be used to generate electricity when renewable sources (wind and solar) are not producing enough power.

​Mitigating "Curtailment" Costs: Sanderson notes that the UK currently spends roughly £1 billion annually to pay wind farm operators to turn off their turbines when the grid is overloaded. He argues that this "excess" energy should instead be used to create green hydrogen to be stored in these caverns, saving taxpayers money and reducing waste.

​Decarbonization: The project is framed as an "essential" step for decarbonizing the Solent Cluster and Southern England, moving the company’s focus from traditional oil and gas toward being a key player in the UK’s transition to Net Zero.

The potential revenues for UKOG’s hydrogen projects are far more significant than their old oil and gas business, primarily because of how the UK government is designing the market.

Rather than just selling gas, UKOG is shifting to a "Utility" model. Here is how they actually make money from these two sites:

1. The "Big Number": £2.3 Billion Annual Impact

According to an independent economic report (by Quod) released in late 2025/early 2026, the South Dorset project alone is estimated to contribute £2.3 billion annually to the UK economy once operational.

• For UKOG specifically: While they won't pocket that entire £2.3bn (which includes supply chain and wider industry gains), it indicates the massive scale of cash flowing through the project.

• Asset Value: Even as a minority owner or operator, a project generating that much economic value would likely be worth hundreds of millions in management fees, dividends, and equity value.

2. How the Revenue Works (The HSBM)

The UK government is launching the Hydrogen Storage Business Model (HSBM) in H1 2026. This is the "secret sauce" for UKOG’s revenue:
