UNESCO have no legal jurisdiction in this case... It clearly falls outside of their remit. Their motivation in referring the case could be wholly innocent, it could be a back covering exercise to ensure legal compliance (doubtful as it doesn't fall within any UNESCO sites), it could be politically motivated to ensure that the coalition with the Green Party continues etc... The fact is we don't know.

topsharepicks... The point of referencing the article was that the industry is itself highlighting the UNESCO issue (Specifically KALLAK), and that the government is a placing/creating further obstacles for the mining industry to overcome

There is certainly more external (media & industry) and internal (Political) focus, but as to how that equates to pressure on the government is another matter?

On the 15th December KB wrote to the government and requested that a copy of the letter be sent to UNESCO... At that juncture, it would appear that a copy of the HIA had already been sent by the Swedish Government.

It’s not the government sitting on the response that’s the worry at this stage, it’s the fact that UNESCO may or may not be obligated to respond in a timely fashion?

And a vague question to UNESCO with no definitive timeline works perfectly for this government. And as an independent organisation, they are under no pressure to reply in a timely manner...
