I've never been in this position before, so please excuse the naive question, but how does taking a share certificate work?
iweb have said they can provide me with a share certificate; is this an old-school bit of paper that I can physically hold?
How is my holding registered with Polymetal? Polymetal investor FAQ says ComputerShare hold a record of the my holding details - is that number of shares I hold, and my name & address? Will ComputerShare continue to hold that record, or will it be automatically transferred to another registrar? In the future Polymetal might pay dividends, so is this how they will know where to send payments? By old-school paper cheque? If I were to move address how would I inform ComputerShare (or whoever takes over from them)? How would they check it's me? I can see I can apply for Shareholder Reference Number (SRN) on the ComputerShare website; is that a unique reference that uniquely identifies my holding?
Yahoo finance, look up AV.L, go to tab Historical Data, set the start date (it's a crap interface but you can type the (year of) start date). Click the "Download" link to get a csv file. Import into spreadsheet. Sometime the yahoo data is in pennies, sometimes in pounds (mixed in the same dataset!), so you might need to do some "massaging" of the data (looking for big of-the-order of 10x jumps).
Mr Tibbles, thank you for the exhaustive research on EU influence on UK law. That is the situation as it is. Brexit offered the opportunity of the freedom to CHANGE law, and move away from the control of EU regulation. UK law still being heavily influenced by EU law might indicate the difficulty of extricating the UK from that regulation, or that politicians have been slow to exploit potential advantages, or that the UK is comfortable with some degree of alignment with the EU, or that those opportunities where illusory. I see the UK rowing back from Brexit.
I recently sold HLN shares. Is my capital gains calculated by subtracting the share price at the end of the first day of trading (308.35) ?
Am I wrong in thinking gold in the ground is an assets and will hold value in the long term? (subject to revolutionary actions to nationalize mines). That it does not matter much to a long term investor if it can be mined and sold today? that's why I'm holding. Am I wrong?
I bought POLY for the first time today. Looks good value.
I have used only basic share dealing features: buy/sell live or with a limit order.
What other features should I be looking for from a share dealing service?
I don't know if I need anything else, but am always keen to learn. I might be missing a trick.
Foreign investors can find value and diversification in UK companies (many of which like JUP are really global companies).
US markets look over valued. S&P 500 is riskily skewed by FAANG + Microsoft.
And the GBP/USD exchange rate is favourable.
Deliveroo can't even get the address right on the order because their postcode database is out of date. I know someone plagued by neighbour's mis-delivered late night takeaways because there are A,B,C suffixes to his house number from infill properties built in 2001. Deliveroo only have ONE job and can't get that right! Interestingly the latest version of the UK PAF, postcode address file (copyright Royal Mail) is 2009 on wikileaks, which a shoddy software developer might use instead of paying £660 p.a. to Royal Mail for 6-monthly updates. These "move fast and break things" upstart companies really are an embarrassment to professional software development.
