I didn’t say food wasn’t growing Zolander, it’s out of town strategy with easier access and egress, lower rent and business rates has worked to date.
It has also worked because leadership in Waitrose has failed, for a long time, additionally there has been a shift to more aspirational premium foods.
Clothing tho at -2.5% and a general move from high st to digital clothing shopping continues.
Retail performance numbers can change rapidly, you can have an excellent brand awareness but that on its own isn’t enough! Retailers have weekly trading meetings with function heads to amend trading strategies.
So to say another 500 food stores over 5/10 years today, is not a fair reflection of reality, and will change and adjust to the market.
